• Limited Volunteer Spaces Now Open for Housing Assistance’s Big Fix

Volunteers can serve as fixers, fundraisers or both

July 17, 2019 (Hyannis, MA) – Housing Assistance Corporation is seeking volunteers for its 10th Annual Big Fix-A-Thon taking place on Saturday, October 5 in Hyannis and Centerville.

“The Big Fix-A-Thon is a wonderful community event that allows volunteers to witness the fruits of their labor in just a few short hours,” said Housing Assistance Chief Development Officer Anne Van Vleck. “In recent years, volunteers have been able to take their commitment a step further by not only donating their time, but by raising funds to support our year-round work so we can assist more residents with the services they need to stabilize their housing.”

Started in 2010, the Big Fix-A-Thon is an annual fundraising day of service that assists veterans, seniors, and disabled homeowners in one town on Cape Cod. Since its inception, it has helped 124 homeowners in nine Cape Cod towns with a variety of small home repair projects that have included yard work; interior and exterior painting; repair or replacement of walkways, stairs; and fences; light plumbing and light electrical work.

This year, residents can serve as Fixers, Fundraisers, or Fixers/Fundraisers. Fixers donate their time on the day of the event conducting small home repairs. All skill levels are welcome. Fundraisers raise funds for Housing Assistance. Fixers and Fundraisers do both.

Those who raise a minimum of $250 will receive a Big Fix-A-Thon commemorative hammer lapel pin. Prizes, which include a $500 gift certificate to Embargo and 2 round-trip Cape Air tickets from Boston to a New England destination, will be given to individuals as well as teams who raise the most funds this year.

Residents interested in volunteering can register at www.haconcapecod.org. The deadline to register is Monday, September 2. Volunteers will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and once Housing Assistance reaches its capacity, registrants will be signed up to volunteer at overflow projects in the Town of Barnstable.

A kick-off ceremony will take place the morning of the Big Fix-A-Thon at Barnstable High School before volunteers go to their assigned homes. Volunteers will spend roughly three hours at their assigned homes before returning to the high school for a lunch donated by the 99 Restaurant.

Housing Assistance received a total of 23 eligible applications for this year’s Big Fix-A-Thon. By the beginning of next month, it will select up to 15 homes as beneficiaries of the event.

Businesses interested in serving as a Big Fix-A-Thon sponsor should contact Event and Resource Development Coordinator Deanna Bussiere at dbussiere@haconcapecod.org or 508-771-5400, ext. 270.

Residents, businesses, churches, schools, and community groups with questions about volunteering should contact Assistant Director of Development Catherine Baker at cbaker@haconcapecod.org or 508-771-5400, ext. 273.
The Mashpee-based nonprofit Heroes In Transition (HIT) is a Big Fix-A-Thon partner, covering a portion of the costs of work done on homes owned by veterans. Big Fix-A-Thon Sponsors include Clancy’s Restaurant in Dennis Port, Cape Light Compact, and R.J. Franey Mechanical Services in Mashpee.
