Barnstable Public Schools Seeks Credit for Life Fair Volunteers
Dear Community Partner:
We hope you will consider volunteering to participate in this year’s Credit for Life Fair. BHS’ Seventh Annual Credit for Life Fair will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019. The event will be held in the newly renovated Library at Barnstable High School. The Credit for Life Fair will provide our high school seniors with a unique opportunity to learn how to make good financial decisions after high school. The Fair is sponsored by Cape Cod Five, is based on a national model, and has won numerous awards. We will need the help of approximately eighty individuals from the business and wider community to ensure the success of the Credit for Life Fair.
The Credit for Life Fair is an interactive simulation that requires students to select a career option and then practice managing their personal budgets based upon the projected monthly income for their chosen career. Over the course of the session, students will visit fifteen different booths representing each of the following areas: Credit and Lending, Retirement and Savings, Insurance, Housing, Furniture, Nutrition, Health, Clothing, Transportation, Luxury, Education and Training, Community Service, Reality Check, Job Search, and Credit Counseling. Each booth will be staffed by community volunteers, such as you, as the students make financial decisions about what they want, what they need, and what they can afford. We encourage you to consider assisting at the booth that best matches your area of expertise. To get a better idea of how the Fair works, click on this link to view our 2015 student-made “infomercial” regarding the Fair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcaGRC_WKZY. (We hope to have an updated infomercial later this fall.)
Because we have nearly 350 seniors, we will need to run two sessions of the Fair. Your time commitment for November 22, 2019 will be approximately 7:00-9:30 for Session 1, 9:45-12:30 for Session 2, or both. There is no preparation needed on your part; each booth has specific choices that students select. Interacting with the students is guaranteed to be both enjoyable and rewarding.
Please respond by email to confirm your participation in this event. Please include your preference regarding session(s) and booth(s). If you have additional questions or concerns at any time, please contact either Ginny Turner or Tina Crook.
